It is such therapy building something with your hands. Handplanes are great because there is so many different ways to make them. Smaller ones for heavier waves and shore pound, larger ones for down the line sections. Each one is different and has its own personality. It's a lot of fun working on new designs and strap placement. I've found that moving the straps closer to the nose increases speed but don't keep your fingers wrapped around the nose at low tide, it hurts when you hit the bottom, yet with more water beneath you it is awesome to be able to bury the nose and duck out of a wave. So it's a trade off - be aware of the conditions you are in!
Can't wait to try out some of these new planes! I've been experimenting with some wider (11.5") and also some smaller planes (just a little larger than your hand). I've found that I really like the channels with a "V" rocker in the tail the best. It really seems to accelerate as it catches the water moving up the face of a wave.
... Anyway I've got to get back to the grind at Frito Lay plantation.
Cheers! - JM
